Patricia H. Deyton is the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs and the Faculty Director of the Center for Gender in Organizations (CGO), the internationally recognized research arm of the Simmons School of Management in Boston. At the School of Management, Ms. Deyton is also Professor of Practice in both the MBA and Undergraduate Programs and is Chair of the Nonprofit Concentration in the MBA Program. She teaches courses in Negotiations, Principled Leadership, Nonprofit Management, Philanthropy, Introduction to Management, Managing Diversity in Organizations (the capstone course in Management), and a travel course to Japan studying women's leadership She also teaches Gender, Leadership and Management, and Nonprofit Management at the Harvard University Extension School, and the capstone course on Leadership in the Ph.D. program at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Simmons. Deyton teaches sections on Gender and Leadership and Gender and Negotiations in the SOM Executive Education Program. She was recently named to the Simmons' President's Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council.
In her work as Director of CGO, she leads numerous research and practice projects consultancies and projects as Principle Investigator currently including Gender Equity in Higher Education in Sub-Saharan Africa Universities; the Japanese Women's Leadership Initiative, and the Gender Mainstreaming Leadership Initiative of Oxfam America. She works as a gender consultant to UNWomen.
Prior to joining Simmons in the summer of 2004, Ms. Deyton was the Executive Director of the Council of Women World Leaders based at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. The Council is comprised of current and former heads of state and government and works to mobilize the experience, network, knowledge and global visibility of the women who hold or have held the highest offices in their own country. The Council moved to Washington, D.C. in 2004 and Ms. Deyton continues her role with the Council as the consulting Senior Advisor.
From 1989 to 2001, Ms. Deyton was Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay. During her tenure the organization doubled in size of programs and budget. She was active in many national and international programs, leading delegations to Cambodia and Macedonia.
Ms. Deyton has served on numerous boards of directors and public commissions and currently serves as a trustee of the Longy School of Music of Bard College where she chairs the Education Committee. She is an active member of The Boston Club and was lead researcher and co-author for the Club's first Census of Women on Boards of Nonprofit Organizations, published in 2013. She also co-authored several CGO Insights on topics relating to gender, women's leadership, and/or organizational effectiveness. She actively trains and speaks on issues relating to gender, negotiations, women's leadership, and principled leadership. She has traveled to over 30 countries worldwide.
Ms. Deyton holds a Masters of Social Work from Columbia University, a Masters of Divinity from Yale University, certificates in management from the Kellogg School at Northwestern University and the Harvard Kennedy School, and a certificate in Ethics from the Darden School at the University of Virginia.
